James Foulk

Since September I've enjoyed adopting Oscar's modern teaching method at a small 5-court tennis club in my home town of Belper, Derbyshire, which simplifies the game for all ages and really does generate positive results over a short period of time. I set out to teach my students to “Play Like The Pro's” and recite the three F’s, Find-Feel-Finish, to aid stroke production.   I’m so pleased to be able to acquire a different and modern coaching qualification and look forward to sitting further Wegner Method exams to make me a better all round coach.“

James began playing tennis aged 11 and first had coaching at age 12.    He represented Derbyshire at Under 14, U16 U18 levels and North Midlands region at Under 15 and U17 age groups, was Derbyshire U18 Indoor Singles Champion plus county Junior Doubles Champion.  Jim played semi professionally on a Nike Squad based at Nottingham Tennis Centre from age 16-18.  He competed for Derbyshire Men’s team in county matches and on County week, both winter and summer cups.

James currently holds a national LTA player rating of 5.2 and was formerly County Mixed Doubles Champion, at senior level, partnering with his former coach.  He obtained 1st LTA Leaders Award (Tennis Assistant) at age 16 and qualified with the LTA ECA Tennis Coach Award (Old 1st ‘Elementary’ stage on the coaching ladder) at age 19.

James has obtained the more recent first level coaching qualification, DCA = Development Coach Award and achieved the LTA Club Coach Award – CCA-d qualification in 2001. This allows coaching of players from beginner to junior county level and above, as well as adult club team standard.

Three of his players have reached the national junior level.

James formerly coached full time both at home in clubs and tennis centres and abroad in the United Arab Emirates.   He has coached for Derbyshire Tennis Association, training the counties best juniors aged U14 and U16.

James is currently coaching part time, in local schools and clubs as an LTA Accredited coach, carrying full LTA insurance, First Aid Certificate & CRB cleared.  He is available for group, performance squads (3-5 players), 1:1 and shared lessons (2 persons).

My main focus right now is promoting and delivering 'cardio' tennis to the community, clubs and leisure centres and instructing Oscar's teaching methodology during these sessions to as many people as possible.  With Cardio Tennis' concept of repetition of balls being fed by the teaching professional and continually hit by the participants, players can practice Oscar's fundamentals in tracking/finding the ball and adding 'timing' etc. For the player this means less thinking about what do with footwork or having to prepare early and take the racket back, resulting in grooving technique and building consistency of shot making.

Says James, “Oscar really and truly is 'The Father of Modern Tennis'.”
