Jim Kane

In Southern Worcester County, Massachusetts, Jim Kane IS tennis.  This self-described “tennis maven”, who retired in 2004 after 35 years as an elementary and middle school teacher, is as dedicated a teaching pro as you’ll find anywhere.

An Auburn, MA resident, Kane roams from his hometown to Charlton to Sturbridge teaching kids and adults in summer tennis clinics on public and private courts.  “Now my classroom is a tennis court”, he says.  Helping Jim stage his popular summer clinics are his son, Matt, a Williams College grad, daughter Mary-Kate, a graduate of Salve Regina University in Newport, RI, and Jessica Bove, a UConn grad and former top player on three time State Champion - Notre Dame Academy of Worcester.

Jim, a PTR certified pro for 20 years, takes extraordinary care to keep his teaching skills up to date.  He has studied Oscar’s book and DVDs and is a big proponent of MTM.  Every September before the US Open in New York, he attends the National Tennis Teachers Conference, where he has met Oscar Wegner in person.  Using Oscar’s method he says, "Heck, I can teach anyone tennis rallying in about 10 or 12 minutes!"  Jim also mentors and coaches top high school players and has a simple instructing philosophy. He explains, “It’s really based on the belief that there’s a perfect stroke in everybody”

In addition to teaching the sport, Jim is a hardcore competitor who plays singles and doubles around the county five to six days a week, many of them at the Worcester Tennis Club where he is a member, and at the Greendale YMCA.

Every Saturday morning finds Jim teaching senior citizens at Overlook Masonic Health Center in Charlton, MA.  He gives group lessons in Auburn, at the Walker Pond Tennis Association in Sturbridge, and his private lessons take him to public courts in Auburn, Leicester, Shrewsbury, Westborough, Webster, and Charlton, MA.    With the motto “have racket, will travel” Jim says, “I have taught tennis just about everywhere in Central Massachusetts including teaching the proper tennis strokes in peoples' houses & garages”.

Jim plans to take Oscar’s method to Jamaica this winter as he works/plays as a guest tennis pro at Sans Souci in Ocho Rios. “I am a proud ‘Modern Tennis Methodology’ instructor.

Coach Kane has made tennis a lifelong love for me.  He shares a well prepared roadmap to success; he gives both mind and body time to learn with clear explanations and fun exercises, and he makes the physical and psychological game an enjoyable challenge. I look forward to every lesson.”  Elaine Latino –Worcester

Jim Kane is the best tennis teacher in New England for all ages- from 3 - 90.”    Martin Griff – Worcester

My daughter’s spark of interest in tennis became her passion, and this I feel is due in part to Coach Kane’s enthusiasm, praise and encouragement.” Doreen Bove (parent of Jessica Bove-Notre Dame Academy, #2 Singles).

Mr. Kane is a great tennis instructor…very patient with great skills. It was nice to meet Mr. Kane because even though I have been coaching for many years, he taught me a lot of different coaching strategies.” Richard Walters-Head Tennis Pro, Couples Sans Souci

As a tennis instructor who has worked with many coaches in the U.S. and Jamaica, I would rate Coach Kane as one of the best, because he is really dedicated, disciplined and a lot of fun to be around.” Radcliffe Watkis – Tennis Pro, Couples Sans Souci - Jamaica
